Tips to Help You Recover from Breast Augmentation Surgery

While breast augmentation surgery is fairly routine- it’s still surgery and will require plenty of research, preparation, and even recovery time. Be sure that you strictly follow the instructions given to you by your doctor. You will be sent home from the surgery with a surgical compression bra on. In addition, there will be an ace bandage wrapped around your chest. You can remove the bandage after 24 hours- but you should wear the compression bra for a week following the surgery, except when you are in the shower.

For the first few days after the surgery, make sure you are getting plenty of rest. You want to sleep propped up in bed or recliner so that you can be at a 45-degree angle. This will help to avoid too much swelling. You should avoid activities that result in overexertion. You may want to consider having someone stay with you to help you with moving around.

For 48 to 72 hours after the surgery, you want to eat light meals/snacks. This will help avoid nausea/stomach upset that many people get when they eat too much after surgery.

You should expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in your breasts for approximately a week after the surgery. This is normal for all women, but those who get larger implants will most likely have more soreness.

You will be given antibiotics and pain medication. Be sure that you take the antibiotics as your physician said to in order to avoid infections at your incisions. If you do have pain, take the pain medication- that is what it is for- just pay attention to the instructions on the bottle.

As soon as possible after the surgery, you should be returning to normal activity. However, you want to avoid heavy lifting or exercise for at least three weeks. Be sure to make and attend follow-up appointments with your physician to track your progress and be sure you’re recovering as expected.
